SUE FINKAM SUPPORTS STATE POLICE SUPERINTENDENT’S CALL FOR REVIEW AND OVERHAUL OF MARION COUNTY CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM

October 12, 2023

Carmel, IN - Sue Finkam for Carmel Mayor announces support for Indiana State Police Superintendent Doug Carter’s call for a full review and overhaul of Marion County’s failed criminal justice system. The lack of accountability on crimes committed and the decisions made in Indianapolis affect all of central Indiana.

This week, the Carmel Police Department released crime stats from January to September of this year compared to the same timeframe in 2022:

  • Burglary (36-40) – 11% increase
  • Damage to Property (25-33) – 32% increase
  • Residential Entry (5-7) – 40% increase
  • Theft (462-534) – 16% increase
  • Theft of Motor Vehicle (49-61) – 25% increase
  • Criminal Mischief/Vandalism (89-92) – 3% increase

In response, Sue Finkam made the following statement:

“Mayor Brainard’s leadership and our outstanding police department have kept Carmel one of the safest cities in America, but due to the failed public safety policies and practices of those around us, we are seeing increases in criminal activity that we must continue to safeguard against. For the safety of our residents, schools, visitors, businesses, and our law enforcement officers, I strongly support state and local law enforcement leaders’ calls for a review and overhaul of Marion County’s criminal justice system to protect our city and our quality of life. As Carmel’s next mayor, crime prevention and public safety will be my top priority.”

In February, Sue Finkam released her Public Safety Plan. She is the only candidate running for mayor that has made crime prevention and public safety a top priority, and the only candidate endorsed by the Carmel FOP Lodge 185 and the Carmel Professional Firefighters Local 4444.
